The MacPhees
Bruce and Katie MacPhee first met in Bend, Oregon in 2008 while Bruce was brewing at Deschutes Brewery and Katie was living in Portland. What started as a long-distance relationship quickly turned into a shared life built around craft beer, family, and community. Bruce moved to Portland in 2009, where the couple married before eventually relocating to California in 2012. They welcomed their daughter Madrona in 2014 and their dog Layla in 2020 — with the entire Balance family quickly becoming part of her pack. With Bruce in the brewing industry since 1999 and Katie since 2009, the MacPhees bring decades of experience, passion, and industry relationships to everything they do. They are excited to share Balance with you and create a space that feels like home for everyone who walks through the doors.
The McEfees
Alana and Bryce found their shared love for beer after finding each other on the soccer field many moons ago. They've been in the beer industry since 2011, from serving up pints, to running taprooms, to throwing events, as well as creating graphics and branding delights. Along with their 2 amazing daughters, Lorelei and Amelia, they bring a creative flare, silliness, and attention to detail to the Balance family.
Tom and Cathy, (aka Pops and Mom) are the patriarch and matriarch of the Balance Beerworks family. While they are new to the beer industry, they are not new to creating craft beverages for family and friends. Pops is known for his creativity and willingness to put a spin on classic cocktails while Mom is always there to put the finishing touches on Pop’s creations. Together, they look forward to bringing their support and enthusiasm to the Balance family.
The Marriotts
Ian and Mykenzie started their relationship long distance—Ian honing his brewing skills in Sacramento and Mykenzie finishing up her medical training in Milwaukee—bonding over Spotted Cows and long days. They share an intense passion and dedication for what they do and a love for all things delicious. Outside of work, they’re usually in the mountains, especially on a powder day. Recently married and expecting their first child.
La Familia Bonilla-Rios
Van and Paul are proud Central Americans (Honduras and Guatemala) who fell in love over their shared joy for nature, travel, art, as well as good eats and drinks, of course. Find them exploring new trails and restaurants throughout California and around the world. They recently welcomed their first frijolito, Julián, into the Balance family to join in on all the adventures ahead. ¡Salud!
